Fall 1883

1883.jpg

Just before heading to prep school in the fall of 1883, 13-year-old Fred Parrish wrote and illustrated this letter to his 14-year-old cousin Henry Bancroft. Fred tells of his visit to their Aunt Anna’s, calling his Aunt’s large yellow cat a "lummucks" (sic, Lummox) and that it howls when it wants to be "mauld" (sic, mauled). At the bottom of the page Parrish has drawn a group of seated men and boys, mostly with their backs to the viewer, watching the cat fight at the top of the page. A striped cat seated on a stool holding a fishing rod is also drawn at the top of the page.
